Location: Fuerteventura – raw, windy, wild and absolutely free.
Date: 26/12 - 6/01
An island where the weather never has a bad day
On Fuerteventura, weather conditions are almost constant year-round. Sun, wind, and temperatures that allow you to live outdoors—no jackets, no rush, no winter gray. This is why the island is one of the best places in Europe for surfing and kitesurfing . Regardless of the month, the waves are there, the wind is there, and the ocean's energy is always there.
You arrive at the island at Puerto del Rosario Airport – Fuerteventura's main airport. We immediately opted for a camper van – it's the easiest and slowest way to travel around the island.
A huge plus is that camper van rentals are located right next to the airport , so after landing, you can literally hop in and hit the road. Important: you need to book a camper van in advance , especially during peak season. The cost is around 700 PLN per night (during peak season), but in return, you get a home on wheels and complete independence.
After picking up your camper, it is worth immediately:
-
do some shopping at the grocery stores that are located on the way towards Corralejo
-
stock up on water, food and basic necessities for the first few days
It is around Corralejo that you can easily find places where you can safely spend the night with your camper , close to the ocean, beaches and surf spots.
There are no traditional campsites in Fuerteventura , so overnight camping is different than in typical tourist destinations. You can safely wild camp , using parking lots near beaches, villages, or bays. This offers enormous freedom, but it also requires a little preparation.
It's worth installing the app Park4night 🌍📍 which will show:
-
legal and safe places to park overnight
-
parking lots adapted for campers
-
water change and camper cleaning points
This way, you don't have to worry about logistics, and traveling by campervan becomes comfortable and completely independent. It's the perfect way to discover the island at your own pace and stop where the views are most beautiful or the waves are the best. 🌊🚐✨
Corralejo – surf vibe and camper freedom 🌊🏄♂️
Corralejo is the true heart of surfing in Fuerteventura. The town is vibrant and has a unique atmosphere: narrow streets lined with colorful pubs, cafes inviting you for a quiet morning coffee, and places where life revolves around the ocean.
One of our favorite spots is "Popcorn Beach" —the perfect place to camp overnight. Next door, there's a bar that plays music in the evenings, and in the mornings, you'll be woken up by yogis practicing on the nearby beach. It's the perfect combination of relaxation, exercise, and positive energy.
The Corralejo coast also hides charming, small villas – atmospheric places worth exploring while strolling or driving along the coast in a camper van. It's here that you can truly experience the island's rhythm: surf, sun, wind, and freedom on your own terms. 🌴🚐✨
If wind conditions permit, while in Corralejo, Flag Beach is worth a visit – an ideal spot for kitesurfing. This calm stretch of ocean, without large waves, is perfect for training or relaxing on the water.
However, you should be careful at low tide – the water becomes very shallow near the shore, and in places, reefs and rocks protrude. This is a place for those who have their own equipment , as there is no kitesurfing school or rental shop.
For experienced kite surfers, it's a true paradise: space, wind, ocean, and almost emptiness on the water. 🌊🪁
El Cotillo – the magic of waves and ocean scenery 🌊✨
Continuing south from Corralejo, we come to El Cotillo – a town that captivates with its tranquility, rugged landscape, and oceanic energy. It's the perfect spot for surfing enthusiasts: big waves, strong winds, and open spaces make every day on the water unforgettable.
El Cotillo also has something special for those seeking extraordinary views and unforgettable moments – a magical escarpment overlooking the ocean, where you can safely park your camper and spend, for example, New Year's Eve right by the waves. The ocean view, the sound of the water, and the tranquility of the island create an unforgettable atmosphere.
This place shows why Fuerteventura is a paradise for surfers and camper van travelers: freedom, ocean, and adventure all rolled into one. 🚐🌅🏄♂️
Also, be sure to rent a surfboard if you don't have your own. In El Cotillo and Corralejo, you'll find local rental shops offering a variety of boards, from longboards to shortboards.
In El Cotillo, it's also worth stopping your camper in a more remote spot , overlooking the El Cotillo Lighthouse . Mornings with sunrise over the ocean and evenings with sunsets by the lighthouse are unforgettable views. It's the perfect place to experience the true freedom of camper travel – far from the crowds, surrounded by waves and the island's rugged landscape. 🌊🚐✨
Fuerteventura has practically one main road, allowing you to easily traverse the island from north to south. After a few days in Corralejo and El Cotillo, it's worth moving on – our next stop was Sotavento Beach .
Sotavento is a legendary spot in the world of kitesurfing and windsurfing , with its famous overflow that creates huge, shallow lagoons perfect for learning and training. Important: if you plan to swim here, check the high and low tides beforehand , as during low tide the water may be too shallow and the spectacular overflow may be absent. It's best to plan your time carefully to avoid disappointment and fully enjoy the lagoons. 🌊🪁
If you're traveling with kids, one of the top attractions is the La Lajita Oasis Park . It's a great place for a family outing – kids can see exotic animals up close, and the entire park is very kid-friendly.
It's worth paying extra for the lemur experience , where you can feed them and learn about their curious habits. Don't miss the bird show , which is truly magical – hawks, eagles, and other birds of prey put on a dynamic show that impresses both children and adults. 🦜✨
At the end of our adventure, we have a little ritual: after a week of campervan freedom, we spend the last three days in luxury – we rent a car and stay at Melia Fuerteventura .
It's the perfect cherry on top of a dream vacation . Here, you can enjoy delicious food, relax by the saltwater pool, and enjoy some peace and quiet after a busy week exploring the island.
For water sports enthusiasts, the hotel beach is a paradise: if the wind allows, you can also take advantage of the surfing and kitesurfing school , where equipment and an instructor are provided. It's the perfect end to your trip – comfort, relaxation, and a dash of ocean adrenaline all in one. 🌊☀️🏄♂️
